ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival / Transfer to Leon & City Tour

Cerro Negro Leon NicaraguaWe suggest the arrival in the morning, the transfer to Leon takes 2 hours approx.)

Meet & greet at the International Airport, follow by private transfer with bilingual guide to Leon City. Leon City Tour. The city main churches soar skyward, including the monumental Cathedral, which is the largest in Central America and a UNESCO world heritage site. During a walking tour, you’ll get to know the historic murals that grace the city and understand the important role Leon has played in Nicaragua’s social, economic and political development. When visiting the Cathedral, you can climb to the roof, where you can enjoy unmatched views of the city. Afterward you will visit the birth house of Ruben Dario (the father of Modern Spanish Literature) and the “Ortiz Gurdian” Art Gallery known as one of the best private art galleries in Latin America. ** Lodging at Austria Hotel, Leon (3*)

Day 02: Half Day Tour Cerro Negro Volcano / Artisan Market / Masaya Volcano / Transfer to Granada (B,L)

Cerro Negro was born in 1850 and has been one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua, with the last eruption occurring in 1999. After a 3 hour 30-minute drive, you will see the volcano rising out of the green trees. The black walls of Cerro Negro create a bizarre contrast with the surroundings. Upon arrival to the base, grab your backpack and hike first on trails and later on black dunes formed by old lava.

For those that want to repel, once up at the Crater you will receive technical training from your experienced bilingual guide. After putting on the protective equipment provided for your safe decent and get ready for the ride of your life – a board trip down the volcano! This is definitely for the more adventurous and those with a love of active sports! Note: We recommend this activity for healthy people with no knee or ankle problems. Those not wanting to board can do the descent by walking. Return to Leon to have lunch, then you will continue your transfer to Granada. On the way you will visit the Masaya arts and crafts market for local ceramics, hammocks wood and leather souvenirs. You will finish your day departing toward Masaya Volcano for the lava night adventure. Since it is an active volcano and for safety reasons the national park allows you to be in the crater only 10 - 15 minutes to appreciate the lava glowing in the bottom of the crater. Day 03: Full Day Tour Granada City, Mountain Bike Adventure & Stand Up Paddle on Nicaragua Lake (B,L)

The Colonial City of Granada that was founded by Captain Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in the year 1524; it was founded next to the Mombacho volcano and the great lake of Nicaragua. Named after the city of Granada in Spain, this city has plenty of colonial churches, narrow streets and large homes with beautiful indoor patios, tiled roofs and pretty colonial colors.

You will explore the city with your guide to arrive later to the main plaza for our walking tour of the surrounding area. You will see “La Merced” church, the famous “Casa de Los Tres Mundos” and the San Francisco convent. Here, we will have the opportunity to see and take pictures of mysterious idols made by our ancestors. This is an impressive collection of genuine pre-Columbian sculptures in human and animal shapes. Due to the historical and cultural value of the city, it is in the process of being declared heritage of mankind by UNESCO.Lunch at local restaurant. Then we will start the adventure learning about the unique flora and fauna as your mountain bike down the peninsula of Las Isletas. When you reach the end, you will find gorgeous views and a paddle board there ready for you. As you SUP back through the Islands to your starting point you will be able to enjoy this amazing part of Nicaragua.

Day 04: Full Day Tour Mombacho Volcano (Puma Trail + Zipline) / Return to Granada & rest of the day at Leisure (B,L)

Mombacho Canopy NicaraguaAfter picking you up in the lobby of your hotel, our vehicle will drive to the foot of the mountain where your guide will get in touch with the park rangers. Then you will switch vehicles and start your way up in a four-wheel drive. The adventure begins on a paved road and right from the start you will be surprised by the biodiversity of this natural reserve and surrounded by exuberant vegetation and breathtaking views. When you reach the summit, you will understand why this ecosystem is a cloud forest. Mombacho Volcano is one of the most visited sites in the South Pacific of Nicaragua. Its lush vegetation and pleasant climate make this site an excellent home for many species of plants and animals, some of which are endemic. Meaning, that they can only be found in this area. Walk around the craters and enjoy a beautiful view at the height of 3,666 meters. From here you can see the city of Granada, the islets of Granada, Apoyo Lagoon, Masaya Volcano, Managua Lake and Momotombo Volcano located in Leon City. As you walk, you´ll see active crater N° 3 with a crater 1.5 miles wide and see the highest point of Mombacho Volcano, at 4,412ft. There are three paths to explore in Mombacho Volcano; this one is called the Puma Trail.

Then you will continue with the Canopy Tour adventure trip! Qualified staff will assist us to put on all the necessary equipment. After we gear up we will be driven to the starting point where instructions and safety measures will be provided in detail by the staff members. We will then be ready to take one of the most exciting excursions in Nicaragua, the canopy tour. Canopy is an English word that refers to the top of the tree which is where the adventure actually takes place. You slide on cables that connect platforms located at the very top of enormous trees. We will be assisted the whole trip so we can enjoy this experience in comfort and safety. As we slide from platform to platform, we can admire the wonderful sights of the surrounding exuberant nature. Our guide will let us know when it is time to board the vehicle that will transport us back to the foot of the mountain. Considered a moderate hike and for the zip line you only need the spirit of adventure. Typical Lunch will be served at Casa Hacienda in between activities. Return to Granada.

Day 05: Transfer from Granada to Ometepe Island for Ometepe Island Tour (B,L)

07:00am Private Guided transfer from Granada and travel to San Jorge Port, Rivas. You will board a ferry at 09:30 Hrs. for a one-hour ride that will take you into the heart of Ometepelt (Ometepe).

A tour of the most interesting places on the island to learn the culture and history of Ometepe. First, we will visit Charco Verde reserve, a lagoon surrounded by forest where we will walk and the guide will explain the flora and fauna of this picturesque place with its mysterious legend. Then you will drive in the car to the museum EL Ceibo where they have two excellent historical museums, an archaeological one and a numismatic one with more than 3000 pieces on display. We will continue to Altagracia to visit the pre-Columbian statues are in the courtyard of the oldest church on the island. After a break for lunch, you will observe a wide range of tropical plants and trees and the history of the place. Culminate with a refreshing swim in the clear waters in a beautiful place (Ojo de agua) then went back to hotel. ** Lodging at Villa Paraiso Hotel, Ometepe Island (3*)

Day 06: Private Hike at Maderas Volcano (B & Box Lunch)

Maderas Volcano is the smaller of the two volcanoes that make up Isla Ometepe. Ometepe is gorgeous in that it sits peacefully in Lake Nicaragua, and at least one of the two volcanoes always seem to be within view no matter where you are on the island. Early departure to the Magdalena farm to start walk along the path to the lake that is on top of the volcano. On the way up you will be able to see multiple troops of monkeys, various species of birds, bats, coffee and chocolate plants and even a harmless (thankfully) snake. The way back down will likely take the same amount of time that it did going up, three to four hours. It is significantly warmer in the afternoons so take your time and enjoy the view. The hike up and down is 8 hours in mud and volcanic rock, which makes both exhausting but enjoyable. Note: Hard hiking, you need to be in good physical condition for this 6 to 8 hour hike Options for less strenuous walking can be arranged.

Day 07: Private guided transfer from Ometepe Island to San Juan del Sur (B)

Transfer from the hotel to San Jose del Sur port to catch the ferry to San Jorge Port for one hour. Then continue your transfer to San Juan del Sur (30 minutes). Rest of the day at leisure to explore the town on your own & experience the night life in bars & restaurants. ** Overnight at Victoriano Hotel, San Juan del Sur

Surfing in NicaraguaDay 08: Surfing Lesson & Rest of day at leisure at the beach (B)

Surfing lessons follow the recommendations set forth by the International Surfing Association. Includes transport to the beach, rashguard, two hours of instruction and board usage for the entire day. A wide range of surfboards is available. Get in touch with the waves and stand up and ride them. You will visit Remanso or Maderas Beach, this will depend on the tide. Return to San Juan del Sur at 15:00 Hrs.

Day 09: Private transfer to International Airport (B)

Private transfer to International Airport for departure. (2.5 – 3 hours). Note: We suggest you book your departure flight not too early, at least at noon. Tours of Exploration is able to assist with International flights to and from Managua.
